WITS Level-0 explained for MWD surface systems

2026-09-26 · 4 min read

WITS — the Wellsite Information Transfer Specification — is how one system at the wellsite hands data to another. Level-0 is its simplest, most widely supported form, and it is what most MWD acquisition software listens to.

The format

WITS Level-0 is plain ASCII. A record opens with && on its own line, then a series of lines each carrying a four-digit item identifier and a value, and closes with !!. The item ID says what the number is — bit depth, ROP, gamma, and so on — so the receiving system knows where to file it.

Serial or network

The same records travel either over a serial (COM) port — the traditional wellsite link between the rig's data system and the logging unit — or over a network (TCP/IP) connection. Good acquisition software accepts both, so it fits whatever the rig provides.

Mapping items to channels

Because different surface systems assign different item IDs, you map incoming items to your channels once at the start of a job. After that, every value that arrives is filed to the right curve automatically. In StrataSuite this mapping lives on the RT Data Map, and it is the one setup step that makes everything downstream — dashboard, surveys, image, logs — line up.

Why it still matters

WITS Level-0 is old and deliberately simple, and that is its strength: almost every rig data system and pulse decoder can produce it, so software that reads it cleanly will connect to nearly anything you meet in the field.
